Cold Check Enforcement Program Russell County Attorney's Office
Each year merchants lose millions of dollars due to receiving bad checks. Over 8,000 bad checks are written per day in Kentucky. This loss to businesses pushes the cost of goods and services higher. And, make no mistake, writing a worthless check is a crime.
In an effort to address this problem, the Russell County Attorney’s Office administers a cold check program. It is a restitution driven program. Those that won’t pay will be vigorously prosecuted.
The program costs the participating merchants nothing. All fees are paid by the check writer. In order to avoid prosecution, the offender must pay the check, plus pay the merchant a $50.00 handling fee. The writer also pays our office a $50.00 fee to help administer the program.
